Practice for the heavy vehicle theory test that Western Australian applicants for an HR, HC or MC licence take at a Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI) service centre or regional agent. Written from fact sheet E89, the Road Traffic Code 2000, the Road Traffic (Vehicles) Regulations 2014 and the Drive Safe handbook: licence classes, vehicle dimensions, axle and combination mass limits, permits and overloads, speed limits, warning triangles, trailer brakes and road rules for long vehicles. The Department's fact sheet E89 (last updated November 2019) lists 17 questions and says applicants answer 10 with 8 correct to pass; the Department's licence pages do not state a question count, pass mark or time limit, so treat those figures as unconfirmed. The questions here are ExamRoo's own, not the real ones, and the 15-minute timer is a practice setting. Not affiliated with the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure.

In Western Australia, a rigid truck has three axles and a GVM of 14 tonnes. What is the lowest licence class that authorises you to drive it?
HR covers a rigid motor vehicle with at least 3 axles and a GVM over 8 tonnes. MR stops at two axles, and HC is needed only when the truck tows a semi-trailer or a trailer with a GVM over 9 tonnes.
A WA driver wants to drive a two-axle truck with a GVM of 10 tonnes. What is the lowest licence class that authorises it?
MR covers a rigid motor vehicle with 2 axles and a GVM over 8 tonnes.
What is the highest GVM of a truck that a WA LR class licence authorises you to drive?
An LR licence covers a motor vehicle with a GVM over 4.5 tonnes but not over 8 tonnes. The 4.5 tonne figure is the C class limit, and 9 tonnes is the trailer limit that applies to MR and HR.
A minibus has a GVM of 4.2 tonnes and is equipped to seat 16 adults including the driver. What is the lowest licence class that authorises you to drive it in WA?
A C class licence covers a vehicle seating no more than 12 adults including the driver. A vehicle of 4.5 tonnes or less that seats more than 12 adults needs LR.
A WA driver holds a C class licence that is not provisional and has no heavy vehicle licence. How long must they have held it to be granted HR?
HR needs a C class licence held for at least two years.

Which course
Is there a theory test for the HR, HC and MC licences in Western Australia?
Yes. The Department of Transport application steps for HR, HC and MC each say you must pass the heavy vehicle theory test when you apply at a Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI) service centre or regional agent. The test covers road rules and heavy vehicle driving in WA, and you cannot use your phone or notes. The Department's fact sheet E89 is written for MR, HR and HC, and the MC page does not link a separate study sheet, so check the MC page when you apply. Practise this in Practice mode →

What should I study for the WA heavy vehicle theory test?
Start with fact sheet E89: the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure says it holds all the information you need to pass the test, and it is linked from the HR and HC application pages. The Drive Safe handbook is the other study material it names. The questions here follow E89 first, then the Road Traffic Code 2000, the Road Traffic (Vehicles) Regulations 2014 and Drive Safe, and use WA law only: they do not use values from the NSW, Queensland or Victorian heavy vehicle tests. Pass mark & results
How many questions are in the WA heavy vehicle theory test, and what is the pass mark?
The Department of Transport's licence pages do not state a question count, pass mark or time limit. Its fact sheet E89, last updated 11 November 2019, lists 17 questions and says applicants answer 10 of them with 8 out of 10 correct. Treat that as the best published guide rather than a confirmed current format. The Department publishes no time limit, so the 15-minute timer on this practice test is an ExamRoo setting.
