Sample Question 1 of 5Trams & Safety Zones

A tram has stopped at a tram stop where there is no safety zone between the tram and your lane. What must you do?

ADrive past the tram at no more than 20 km/h, keeping at least 2 metres from any passengers
BStop level with the rear of the tram and not drive past while its doors are open or pedestrians are crossing
CSound your horn and pass the tram on its right-hand side
Answer & Source:

Where there is no safety zone you must stop level with the rear of the tram and must not drive past while its doors are open or a pedestrian is crossing between the tram and the left side of the road. Once the doors are closed and the road is clear you may pass at no more than 10 km/h (rule 163; Road to Solo Driving, page 138).

Sample Question 2 of 5Trams & Safety Zones

What is the maximum speed at which you may pass a stopped tram at a tram stop (with no safety zone) once its doors are closed and no pedestrians are crossing?

A20 km/h
B40 km/h, as in a school zone
C10 km/h
Answer & Source:

After stopping behind the tram you may proceed past it only when its doors are closed and no pedestrian is crossing, and you must not exceed 10 km/h while passing it (rule 163(4); Road to Solo Driving, page 138).

Sample Question 3 of 5Trams & Safety Zones

What is a Victorian 'tramway', marked by double continuous yellow lines or a physical structure beside the tram tracks?

AA part of the road for trams only; you must not drive in it at any time unless you have to avoid an obstruction
BA transit lane where vehicles carrying two or more people may drive during peak hours
CA lane that other vehicles may use as long as they give way to trams approaching from behind
Answer & Source:

A tramway is in operation at all times and is marked by a Tramway sign and double continuous yellow lines or a physical separation. You must not drive in it unless you have to avoid an obstruction (rule 155A; Road to Solo Driving, page 140).

Sample Question 4 of 5Trams & Safety Zones

What does a Tram Lane sign showing hours of operation mean?

AYou may use the tram lane at any time as long as you drive faster than the trams
BTrams must give way to vehicles turning across the tram lane during the hours shown
CYou must not drive in the lane during the hours shown, except for 50 metres to enter or leave the road
Answer & Source:

A part-time tram lane is in operation during the hours on the Tram Lane sign. You must not travel in it then, except for up to 50 metres to enter or leave the road or briefly to overtake a bicycle rider, and you must never delay a tram (rule 155; Road to Solo Driving, page 139).

Sample Question 5 of 5Trams & Safety Zones

Can you pass a tram on its right-hand side in Victoria?

AYes, at any time provided the road ahead is clear and you signal
BOnly if the tram tracks are at or near the far left side of the road
CYes, provided you do not exceed 10 km/h while you pass the tram
Answer & Source:

You must not pass or overtake a tram on its right unless the tram tracks are at or near the far left side of the road or a traffic sign or road marking allows it (rule 160(2); Road to Solo Driving, page 138).
