The department says it takes about an hour; the 60-minute timer here is an ExamRoo practice setting. Marks and lights are described in words here. Not affiliated with the Department of Transport.

BA canoe being paddled
CA tender with a 5 hp motor used alongside its parent vessel
DA recreational boat with a 15 hp outboard motor

Frequently asked questions

ID & eligibility

Who needs a Recreational Skipper's Ticket in Western Australia?

You need a Recreational Skipper's Ticket (RST) to operate a recreational vessel with a motor that exceeds 6 horsepower (4.5 kW) in Western Australia. Only the skipper, the person in charge of the vessel, needs one, and they must carry it whenever they operate a vessel. You do not need an RST to own a boat that is docked or on land, to operate a vessel with no motor, or to operate a vessel with a motor of 6 hp (4.5 kW) or less.

How old do I have to be to get an RST, and are there limits for young holders?

You must be at least 14 years old to get an RST, and if you are under 18 you need a letter of consent from a parent or guardian. Holders under 16 are restricted to daylight hours and a low speed: the Department of Transport says under 8 knots, and the Navigable Waters Regulations 1958 set the limit at no more than 8 knots. Those limits no longer apply once you turn 16.

What is in the RST theory assessment?

The RST assessment is done with an authorised provider and has a theory section and a practical section, and you must pass the theory before you can do the practical. The theory section is 40 multiple-choice questions, you need 34 correct answers to pass, and the department says it should take about 1 hour. It covers boating rules and regulations, the international collision rules, buoys and other navigation aids, navigation lights, maintenance, required safety equipment, trip planning and responsibilities to passengers, and distress signals and emergencies. Renewing & expiry

Does my RST expire, and what if I am visiting from interstate?

No. An RST is valid for your lifetime and has no renewal or recurring fees. If you pass the assessment, the assessor gives you an interim certificate valid for 3 months while your card is processed. If you hold a valid and current skipper's ticket or boat licence from another state or country, you do not need an RST for a stay in Western Australia of 3 months or less. If you will stay longer than 3 months, you need to get an RST.
