The 30-minute timer is an ExamRoo practice setting, not an official limit.

5 Most Common Learner Driver Licence Knowledge Test Sample Questions & Answers

Preview 5 practice questions with answers and explanations that name their source.

Sample Question 1 of 5Stop signs and lines

You approach a Stop sign in Tasmania and can see no other traffic nearby. What must you do?

ACome to a complete stop at the stop line.
BSlow down and go through if the way is clear.
CStop if another vehicle is approaching.
DGive way to traffic on your right and then proceed.
Answer & Source:

A Stop sign means stop, whether or not other traffic is nearby. Slowing and rolling through is the tempting mistake, but the handbook says stopping at a Stop sign and line is the law. After stopping you must give way before moving.

Sample Question 2 of 5Alcohol and drugs

What is the general blood alcohol limit for the holder of a full driver licence in Tasmania?

A0.00%
B0.02%
C0.05%
D0.08%
Answer & Source:

A full licence holder commits an offence by driving with a blood-alcohol level over 0.05%. 0.08% is the limit in some other countries, not the Tasmanian limit. Learner and provisional drivers must have no alcohol at all.

Sample Question 3 of 5Alcohol and drugs

How much alcohol may a Tasmanian learner driver have in their body when driving?

ALess than 0.02%
BLess than 0.05%
CNone
DLess than 0.01%
Answer & Source:

Learner and provisional drivers must not drive with any alcohol in the body. The 0.05% limit applies to full licence holders and is not the learner limit. The same zero rule covers drivers of heavy vehicles and public passenger vehicles.

Sample Question 4 of 5Speed limits

What is the fastest speed a Tasmanian learner licence holder may drive a car, even where the posted limit is higher?

A80 km/h
B90 km/h
C100 km/h
D110 km/h
Answer & Source:

Learner licence holders must not drive faster than 90 km/h, and must obey any lower limit. 100 km/h is the maximum for a P1 provisional driver, which is the figure most often confused with it. The handbook adds "including L1 and L2", which the current Plates Plus pathway no longer distinguishes.

Sample Question 5 of 5Mobile phones

You are a Tasmanian learner driver stopped at traffic lights. May you take a call using your phone's hands-free Bluetooth?

AYes, because the vehicle is stationary.
BNo, unless the phone is in a fixed holder.
CYes, if the call is short and the lights are red.
DNo, a learner may not use a phone, even hands-free.
Answer & Source:

Learners and P1 provisional drivers are banned from using a mobile phone while driving, including hands-free and voice-activated modes, and including when stationary but not parked. The hands-free allowance applies to full and P2 licence holders only.
