Sample Question 1 of 5Emergency Service Vehicles

You are driving on a multi-lane road in Queensland and approach a parked tow truck displaying flashing yellow lights. If it is safe and practical, what must you do?

ASlow to 40 km/h and stay in your current lane until you have passed it.
BMove over to leave at least 1 clear lane beside the tow truck.
CStop behind the tow truck until its flashing lights are switched off.
Answer & Source:

Under s 78A(2) of the Road Rules Regulation, on a multi-lane road you must pass in a clear lane and leave at least 1 other clear lane between your vehicle and the emergency response vehicle. Tow trucks are emergency response vehicles. Queensland's rule has no fixed 40 km/h figure.

You are driving on a single-lane road in Queensland and must pass a parked police car displaying flashing lights. What must you do?

AMove over as far as possible within your lane and slow down to a safe speed.
BKeep to the speed limit, because the move-over rule applies only to multi-lane roads.
CStop and wait until the police car's flashing lights are switched off.
Answer & Source:

On a single-lane road you must move over as far as possible within your lane and slow down to a safe speed (s 78A(4) of the Road Rules Regulation). The rule is not limited to multi-lane roads.

AOnly marked Queensland Police Service and Queensland Ambulance Service vehicles attending priority-one incidents on highways.
BCommercial freight vehicles and council waste collection trucks displaying amber beacons while travelling in traffic.
CPolice, ambulance, fire and rescue, SES, tow trucks and roadside assistance vehicles displaying flashing lights.
Answer & Source:

Emergency response vehicles include Queensland Police Service, Queensland Ambulance Service, fire and rescue, Rural Fire Service and SES vehicles, tow trucks and motor breakdown service vehicles such as RACQ patrols. The rule applies when they are parked and displaying flashing lights (Road Rules Regulation s 78A and schedule 5).

Sample Question 4 of 5Merging Lanes

Two lines of traffic merge into one on a Queensland road that has no marked lanes. Who must give way?

AThe vehicle on the right-hand side always has priority over the vehicle on the left.
BThe vehicle travelling at the higher speed has right of way over the slower vehicle.
CThe vehicle that is ahead has right of way; the vehicle behind must give way.
Answer & Source:

Where lines of traffic merge, a driver must give way to a vehicle in another line if any part of that vehicle is ahead of the driver's vehicle (Road Rules Regulation s 149).

Sample Question 5 of 5Merging Lanes

Your marked lane is ending and you must move into the adjacent lane. Who must you give way to?

ATraffic continuing in the adjacent lane must slow down and make space for you to merge.

COnly vehicles that are travelling faster than you in the adjacent lane.
Answer & Source:

A driver moving from one marked lane to another must give way to any vehicle travelling in the same direction in the lane being entered, whether or not the lane is ending (Road Rules Regulation s 148(1)).
