Sample Question 1 of 5Speed Limits & School Zones

In a South Australian school zone, what speed limit applies whenever a child is on the road, footpath, median strip or a bicycle?

A40 km/h.
B50 km/h.
C25 km/h.
Answer & Source:

A 25 km/h limit applies in a school zone whenever a child is present, including outside school hours. The handbook defines a child as a person under 18, or a student of any age wearing a school uniform. 40 km/h is a common limit in residential areas, and 50 km/h is only the default urban limit.

Sample Question 2 of 5Speed Limits & Emergency Zones

At what speed must you pass a stationary emergency services vehicle that has flashing blue or red lights in South Australia?

A25 km/h.
B40 km/h.
C60 km/h.
Answer & Source:

You must slow to 25 km/h when you pass a stationary emergency vehicle with flashing blue or red lights. The same 25 km/h limit now applies when passing a stationary breakdown services vehicle with flashing amber lights (from 19 May 2025).

Sample Question 3 of 5Speed Limits & School Zones

What is the default speed limit in built-up (urban and suburban) areas in South Australia if no speed signs are displayed?

A60 km/h.
B50 km/h.
C70 km/h.
Answer & Source:

The default speed limit in a built-up area is 50 km/h unless a sign shows a different limit. Signs may set higher limits such as 60 or 80 km/h on some roads, so 60 and 70 km/h are not the default.

Sample Question 4 of 5Speed Limits & School Zones

What is the default speed limit on rural (non-built-up) roads and highways in South Australia where there are no speed limit signs?

A110 km/h.
B100 km/h.
C90 km/h.
Answer & Source:

In South Australia, the default speed limit outside built-up areas is 100 km/h, unless signposted as 110 km/h.

Sample Question 5 of 5Speed Limits & School Zones

What is the maximum speed limit for a Learner driver (L-plater) in South Australia on any road, even if signposted at 110 km/h?

A100 km/h.
B110 km/h.
C80 km/h.
Answer & Source:

Learner drivers must not drive over 100 km/h, even where the signposted limit is 110 km/h. Provisional (P1 and P2) drivers are subject to the same 100 km/h cap.
