Practice for the South Australian boat operator's licence theory test, written from the SA Recreational Boating Safety Handbook (September 2026 edition) by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport. The real test is multiple choice. Part A (navigation rules, signals and alcohol limits) must be answered 100% correctly, and Parts B and C (boating rules and general safety) need at least 75%. SA does not publish how many questions the real test has or its time limit, and our practice tests cannot apply the separate Part A rule, so they score the overall mark at 75%. The 40 questions (14 from Part A, 26 from Parts B and C) and 40 minutes are ExamRoo practice settings, not an official format. Not the real exam.

5 Most Common Boat Operator's Licence Theory Test Sample Questions & Answers

Preview 5 practice questions with answers and explanations that name their source.

Sample Question 1 of 5Meeting head-on

You are driving a power-driven boat and another power-driven boat is coming straight at you. What must each boat do?

AAlter course to starboard so you pass port side to port side
BAlter course to port so you pass starboard side to starboard side
CSlow down and hold course while the other boat steers clear
Answer & Source:

Both boats turn to starboard, as they would in a channel or river, so they pass each other port side to port side. Turning to port is the common mistake. Source: SA Recreational Boating Safety Handbook, Navigation.

Sample Question 2 of 5Crossing situations

You are driving a power-driven boat and another power-driven boat is crossing from your starboard (right) side. What must you do?

AHold your course and speed, because you reached the crossing point first
BGive way: slow, stop or alter course, and do not cross ahead of it
CTurn to port and pass quickly across its bow to clear the area
Answer & Source:

The boat that has the other on its starboard side is the give way vessel. It must stop, slow down or change course and avoid crossing ahead. Being there first gives no right of way. Source: SA Recreational Boating Safety Handbook, Navigation.

Sample Question 3 of 5Crossing situations

A power-driven boat approaches from your port (left) side and a collision is possible. What is your duty as the vessel with right of way?

ATurn to port and pass close behind the other boat as early as possible
BHold course and speed, acting only if the other boat fails to give way
CStop your boat at once and wait until the other boat has passed
Answer & Source:

A boat approaching on your port side must give way, so you stand on. Hold course and speed with caution and act only if it becomes obvious the other boat is not going to give way. Source: SA Recreational Boating Safety Handbook, Navigation.

Sample Question 4 of 5Crossing situations

You are the stand-on vessel and the give way boat is clearly not changing course. You must act to avoid a collision. Which turn should you avoid if you can?

AA turn to port
BA turn to starboard
CAny reduction in speed
Answer & Source:

Unless there is no alternative, do not turn to port. That is the direction the other boat is most likely to turn, so you could cause the collision you are trying to avoid. Source: SA Recreational Boating Safety Handbook, Navigation.

Sample Question 5 of 5Crossing situations

You are the give way vessel in a crossing situation. Which action meets the rules?

AWait until the other boat is very close, then swerve sharply
BSpeed up and cross ahead of the other boat before it arrives
CAct early and obviously, by slowing or altering course well ahead
Answer & Source:

The give way vessel must take early, positive action that the other operator can see, and must avoid crossing ahead of the stand-on vessel. Late swerving or racing across breaks the rule. Source: SA Recreational Boating Safety Handbook, Navigation.

Pass mark & results

What is the pass mark for the SA boat licence test?

The test has parts. Part A covers navigation rules, signal recognition and alcohol limits, and every question in it must be answered correctly before you can go on. The number of questions and the time limit on the real test are not published.

Can I sit the test again if I fail, and how long does a pass last?

Yes. SA allows a re-sit, up to three attempts in a day, and a test fee applies to each attempt. A successful test result is valid for 6 months, so you need to be issued your licence within that time. Check the SA.GOV.AU page for the current fees and rules before you book.
