Knowledge practice for the BoatSafe theory assessment for the Queensland recreational marine driver licence (RMDL). The real assessment has 50 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes and BoatSafe requires 100%; training providers let you correct and resit until you are competent, and the practical assessment is separate. The official questions are not public, so ours are written from the BoatSafe competency standard, the Marine Safety Act and Regulation and Maritime Safety Queensland guidance. The 50 questions, 45 minutes and 100% match the real assessment, but our questions are a practice bank, not the official ones.

Which description best fits the general safety obligation under Queensland marine safety law?
The Transport Operations (Marine Safety) Act 1994 puts a general safety obligation on owners, operators, masters and crew: the ship must be safe, properly equipped and maintained, and operated safely. Carrying only the compulsory items is not enough if the trip calls for more. Source: qld.gov.au, General safety obligation.
Why does Maritime Safety Queensland list some items, such as a chart or compass, as equipment you "should carry" rather than "must carry"?
The "should carry" items are recommended equipment that helps you meet the general safety obligation. They are not compulsory in every case, but leaving them behind can still count against you if something goes wrong. Source: MSQ, Safety equipment for boats in Queensland.
Under the Marine Safety Regulation 2016, a boat counts as equipped with its safety equipment only if the owner or master does what?
The regulation says a ship is taken to be equipped only if the owner or master tells each person on board where the safety equipment is kept, for example orally, by demonstration or on a printed sign. Lodging a trip plan or having an inspector check the gear is not part of the rule. Source: Transport Operations (Marine Safety) Regulation 2016, s 16.
On a recreational boat in Queensland, who is responsible for the safety of passengers and for their alcohol consumption?
MSQ states that the skipper is responsible for the safety of passengers and their alcohol consumption. The skipper cannot hand that duty to the passengers. Source: MSQ, Alcohol and drug rules.
A Queensland boat owner lets a friend drive the boat. What must the owner do under the Marine Safety Regulation 2016?
The owner of a Queensland regulated ship must ensure the person operating it as master holds the required licence. A recreational ship owner is not in breach if they reasonably believed the driver was licensed. Source: Transport Operations (Marine Safety) Regulation 2016, s 59.
