Sample Question 1 of 5VIC compliance certificate deadline

A licensed plumber in Victoria finishes altering a below-ground sanitary drain. By when must the signed compliance certificate be given to the customer and the regulator notified?

AWithin 10 business days of completing the work
BWithin 2 business days of completing the work
CWithin 5 days of completing the work
DWithin 20 business days of completing the work
Answer & Source:

Building Act 1993 (Vic) s 221ZH(2) gives a licensed plumber 5 days from completion to give the person for whom the work was done a signed compliance certificate and to notify the regulator (penalty 60 penalty units). The 10 and 20 business day periods are Queensland notifiable-work periods, not the Victorian rule.

Sample Question 2 of 5VIC who may sign a compliance certificate

A registered plumber in Victoria, who is not licensed, completes $5,000 of water supply pipework. Who may sign the compliance certificate form?

AThe registered plumber, because that person did the work
BOnly a licensed plumber who carried out or supervised the work
CAny plumber registered in the same business
DThe building owner, after inspecting the finished work
Answer & Source:

Under s 221ZK of the Building Act 1993 (Vic) a person must not sign a compliance certificate form unless he or she is a licensed plumber (penalty 60 penalty units). The certificate must state that the licensed plumber carried out the work or that it was done under his or her supervision (s 221ZI).

Sample Question 3 of 5VIC unlicensed plumbing work

Which work may a person who is neither licensed nor registered carry out in a Victorian dwelling under the Plumbing Regulations 2018?

AReplacing a tap with a new mixer tap and connecting new pipework
BReplacing the thermostatic mixing valve on a hot water service
CChanging over a water efficient shower head
DInstalling a new basin and trap in an existing bathroom
Answer & Source:

Regulation 13 of the Plumbing Regulations 2018 (Vic) lists work that does not need a licence or registration: changing over a water efficient shower head in a dwelling and repairing or replacing tap washers or other minor tap repairs. New fixtures, mixers on new pipework and TMV work are plumbing work.

Sample Question 4 of 5VIC drainage work scope

Which of the following is NOT drainage work under the Plumbing Regulations 2018 (Vic)?

ARelining a below-ground sanitary drain
BTesting a below-ground stormwater drain
CRepairing a below-ground drain up to the sewer connection
DInstalling a subsoil drain used only to collect subsoil water
Answer & Source:

Regulation 15(2) of the Plumbing Regulations 2018 (Vic) excludes subsoil drains for the sole purpose of subsoil water collection, stormwater pits, grated channels and below-ground retention tanks, and the excavation of trenches. Relining, testing and repair of below-ground sanitary and stormwater drains are drainage work (reg 15(1)).

Sample Question 5 of 5VIC plumbing exam format

How does the Building and Plumbing Commission describe its Victorian plumbing theory exams?

AClosed-book multiple choice drawn from a published bank, with an 80% pass mark
BBased on prescribed units, mixing multiple choice and short answer questions, with reference materials looked up
CA practical-only assessment of three or four common tasks completed in a workshop
DAn interview with representatives of the Commission and Energy Safe Victoria about a logbook
Answer & Source:

Theory exams are based on the prescribed units of competency, require candidates to look up and interpret reference materials, perform calculations and read drawings, and contain a mixture of multiple choice and short answer questions. Practical exams are a separate type of exam, and some classes also require an interview.
