Practice questions for the written part of the NSW Firearms Licence Qualification Course, the approved firearms safety training course every first-time longarm licence applicant must pass (Firearms Regulation 2017 cl 144). Written from the NSW Police Force Firearms Registry's Users Guide and fact sheets and the Firearms Act 1996 and Regulation as amended to 1 July 2026: safe handling, firearm basics, licence categories and genuine reasons, permits to acquire, storage, transport, ranges and legal duties. The real course is run by approved instructors with a written test and a practical assessment; the Registry does not publish a question count, pass mark or time limit, so 30 questions, 80% and 30 minutes are ExamRoo practice settings. Pistol (category H) applicants do a separate pistol club course. Not affiliated with the NSW Police Force.

5 Most Common Firearms Licence Qualification Course Sample Questions & Answers

Preview 5 practice questions with answers and explanations that name their source.

Sample Question 1 of 5Required course (longarms)

In NSW, which safety course does the Firearms Regulation 2017 prescribe for a first-time applicant for a licence covering firearms other than pistols?

AThe NSW Game Hunting Licence (R-licence) test
BAn approved course run by a pistol club
CThe Firearms Licence Qualification Course
DA safe storage inspection by the local police
Answer & Source:

Clause 144(1)(a) of the Firearms Regulation 2017 prescribes the Firearms Licence Qualification Course, or another approved course run by an approved person or body, for firearms other than pistols. A pistol club course is the prescribed course for pistols, not for rifles and shotguns.

Sample Question 2 of 5Required course (pistols)

A first-time applicant in NSW wants a category H (pistol) licence. Who runs the safety course prescribed for pistols?

AAn approved pistol club
BThe NSW Firearms Registry
CAny licensed firearms dealer
DService NSW
Answer & Source:

For pistols, clause 144(1)(b) of the Firearms Regulation 2017 prescribes an approved course conducted by or on behalf of an approved pistol club. The Firearms Registry issues licences but does not run the course, and dealers and Service NSW have no training role.

Sample Question 3 of 5Who must do the course

Under the Firearms Act 1996 (NSW), which licence applicants must complete the prescribed firearms safety training course?

AEvery applicant, including people renewing a licence
BOnly applicants for a category C, D or H licence
COnly applicants who are under 25 years of age
DApplicants who have never held a firearms licence
Answer & Source:

Section 11(3)(b) requires the course for a person who has never held a licence. A person renewing does not repeat it, and the requirement applies to every category, not only C, D and H. The Commissioner can still require a course in a particular case (s 11(3A)).

Sample Question 4 of 5Supervision during the course

During an approved firearms safety training course in NSW, an unlicensed participant may use a firearm under what supervision?

AAny licensed adult supervising up to five participants
BAn approved instructor, one-to-one
CNone, once the participant has passed the theory test
DThe range owner watching from the clubhouse
Answer & Source:

Section 6B(1)(b) of the Firearms Act 1996 exempts a course participant only while supervised by a firearms instructor approved by the Commissioner, and s 6B(1A) requires direct supervision, so the supervisor supervises one person only. Passing the theory part does not remove the need for supervision.

Sample Question 5 of 5Minimum age for the exemption

In NSW, the exemption that lets unlicensed people use a firearm on a safety course or at an approved range does NOT apply to anyone under what age?

A10 years
B14 years
C12 years
D16 years
Answer & Source:

Section 6B(3) of the Firearms Act 1996 says the exemption does not apply to a person under the age of 12 years. Twelve is also the minimum age for a minor's firearms permit (Firearms Regulation 2017 cl 53).
